From Line to Layer

  • Swinton's Art Supplies 7160 Fisher Street Southeast Calgary, AB, T2H 0W5 Canada (map)

$100, 1 - day workshop

Bridge the gap between the sketchbook and the canvas. Learn how drawing serves as the foundation for strong, expressive paintings. A simple drawing evolves into a fully realized painting. In this workshop, you will learn how drawing lays the groundwork for both colour and expression. Through demonstration and discussion, Ashley will walk through her process of translating drawn ideas into painted forms. Emphasis is placed on how thoughtful line work informs composition, movement, and structure, and how those early marks guide colour choices and layering decisions as the painting develops. Participants will gain insight into building a painting layer by layer, understanding when to respond intuitively and when to refine with intention. The focus is on process rather than perfection, offering practical tools for creating work that feels both visually dynamic and emotionally resonant. In this workshop, you’ll explore:

  • Using drawing as the foundation for painting

  • Translating sketches into strong compositions - Building depth through layered paint

  • Connecting line, colour, and expression

  • Developing a fluid, intuitive studio process

This demo-style workshop is ideal for artists looking to deepen their understanding of how drawing and painting inform one another, and for those looking for a more connected, process-driven approach to their work.
